FYI, let's limit the comps to the first 2 pages, I need this thread to be used for chatter and what games members would like to pick up or split. Service thread getting way to much chatter. Ty.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

Streaking

Mark Buehrle, Chicago White Sox

While the perfect game in his last outing gave Mark Buehrle some overdue national recognition, the perennial ace of the Chicago White Sox staff makes a living off of his consistency.

Buehrle (11-3, 3.28) might not scare batters with overpowering stuff, and his numbers don’t always jump off the page. But when it comes to getting guys out and giving his team a chance to win the game, there are few better in the majors.

The reliable lefty is 5-1 with one no-decision in his past seven starts. In this span, he has given up more than three earned runs just once, and his perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays is among his two shutouts in this span. His previous outing was an eight-inning effort in which he allowed one run against the Baltimore Orioles in another victory.

Roy Oswalt, Houston Astros

Houston’s high-profile hurler doesn’t appear to have much for his efforts this season, but his recent numbers suggest Oswalt (6-4, 3.66 ERA) has been doing some of his best work of late.

The 31-year-old righty has posted a record of 3-0 with three no-decisions in his past six starts. He has gone at least six innings and given up three or fewer earned runs in each of these starts.

Overall, the two-time 20-game winner has yielded just 10 earned runs in his past six starts, and has struck out 37 batters while walking seven.

Slumping

Vin Mazzaro, Oakland A’s

Mazzaro was put in the difficult position of trying to help plug leaks in a patchwork rotation for what quickly became another lost season for the Oakland A’s. The 22-year-old right-hander is learning the hard way.

After winning his first two starts with shutout performances over the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, Mazarro (2-7, 4.75 ERA) has gone 0-7 with one no-decision in his past eight starts.

His last two efforts have been far from encouraging; he gave up 14 total runs to the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees while failing to get past the fourth inning in either blowout loss.

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds

Although Arroyo leads the Reds with 10 wins, his inconsistency can be maddening for those who back this club.

Sandwiched around a two-win, 16-inning scoreless streak are four ugly losses in which Arroyo (10-9, 5.21 ERA) gave up at least five earned runs and lasted past the fifth inning just twice.

His last outing resulted in a five-inning losing effort against the Los Angeles Dodgers in which he gave up five earned runs.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants (-135)

No sooner did the ink dry on his mega-contract, than the magic seemed to fall out of Barry Zito’s curveball.

A record of 27-40 and a spot at the end of the rotation surely wasn’t what the Giants had in mind when they signed the left-hander to a nine-figure deal after Zito became a perennial All-Star for the Bay Area rival Oakland A’s.

Though you wouldn’t expect light-hitting Pittsburgh to be among the opponents to stymie Zito (6-10, 4.68 ERA), the Pirates have done just that. He has lost three straight starts against Pittsburgh, despite giving up just seven earned runs in those starts. He gave up just two runs July 18 in Pittsburgh, but still ended up tagged with the loss.

Although there is nothing in his performance to indicate he is on a downward swing, you have to worry about Zito’s confidence. His body language in recent losses suggests the mounting close calls are taking a toll, and that’s never a good sign.

Pick: Pirates

Cleveland Indians at Los Angeles Angels (-210)

The Indians just completed a bizarre, historic run in which they faced left-handed starters in nine straight games. Their recent offensive production probably has them wishing that the lefties would keep coming.

After a few tweaks of their lineup were made to adjust to the onslaught of southpaws, the Indians managed to score 31 runs in a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners over the weekend.

The adjustment back to right-handers won’t come easily, as Cleveland faces one of the league’s hottest starters in the Angels’ Jered Weaver (10-3, 3.50 ERA). Weaver should have enough to slow down Cleveland’s buzzsaw.

Pick: Angels

Lady Luck: Tuesday's best WNBA bets

Washington Mystics at Indiana Fever (-7.5)

Although the Fever have been one of the league’s hottest teams, they likely are in for a tough home game against the surging and motivated Mystics.

Washington is coming off impressive back-to-back wins in which it got balanced efforts on both ends of the court.

Crystal Langhorne had 19 points to lead four players in double figures in their 87-73 win over Sacramento Monarchs. Three Mystic players also scored in double figures in their 75-64 win over Chicago.

The Mystics will be looking to avenge last week’s 82-70 loss to Indiana, the Fever’s lone win in a recent three-game road swing.

Washington is 7-2 against the spread in its last nine road games; the points appear to have some value here.

Pick: Washington.

Phoenix Mercury at Connecticut Sun (-3)

This appears to be the Something Has to Give game of the season thus far in the NBA. Diana Taurasi and the league’s top-ranked offense face the league’s top-ranked defense in Connecticut.

Both teams have momentum working in their favor; the Mercury have won and covered in their past three road games, while the Sun have won and covered in five of their past six home tilts.

The Mercury’s offense has lit up the scoreboard at a whopping 93.1 points per game but faces a Sun defense that holds opponents to just 70.1. Connecticut also leads the league in field-goal and 3-point percentage defense.

What’s more, the Sun have enough offense of their own (74.2 ppg, eighth in the league) to hang in a fast-paced game.

Pick: Connecticut.

Houston Astros vs. Chicago Cubs Houston Astros
+109 at 5DIMES > 14h.
Game Two of this three-game series at Wrigley Field between the host Chicago Cubs and the visiting Houston Astros is set for Tuesday night with the first pitch at 8:05PM EST. Houston even though they do not have a winning record on the road the last two seasons they have been profitable for their backers posting a record of 61-65 for +13.1 Units. During the second half of the season the last two years they have been solid going 60-41 for +23.7 Units. The Astros will send Roy Oswalt to the bump with his 6-4 record and ERA of 3.66 on the season. He will face a Cubs team that is ranked 25 in hitting averaging .252 at the plate scoring 4.3 runs per game. Oswalt is 4-2 on the road with an ERA of 3.37 and 1-0 his last three outings with an ERA of 2.86 with the Astros 3-0 behind him over that span. He is also 15-4 (+10.9) during the second half of the season the last two years and 23-4 (+18.3) when facing a winning team with a win percentage of 51 to 54 percent. Chicago will send Ryan Demptser to the hill with his 5-5 record and ERA of 4.09. Dempster is 4-1 at home this season with a 4.12 ERA but over his last three trips to the mound he is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.91 while the Cubs are 1-2 behind him over that span. The Cubs are 2-5 in his last 7 as a favorite in this price range, 1-5 in Dempster’s last 6 overall and 0-9 if he is coming off a quality start in his last outing. With support for the visitor coming from both the fundamental and technical elements we will back them here as they get the game two victory at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.

Houston Astros vs. Chicago Cubs Houston Astros
+109 at 5DIMES > 14h.
Take the Houston Astros on the Moneyline, We are getting solid value here Tuesday night with the Astros who have Roy Oswalt (6-4, 3.66 ERA) on the mound. Oswalt has pitched solid on the road this season with an ERA of just 3.37 allowing just 56 hits over 72 innings while striking out 52 batters. Oswalt has also pitched solid over his last 3 starts with an ERA of just 2.86 while lasting an average of 7.3 innings per start. This is Ryan Dempster's (5-5, 4.09 ERA) first start since July.2 so I do not expect him to throw deep into this game and both teams bullpens are not rested since last night's game went into the 13th inning. The Cubs are just 1-5 in Dempster's last 6 starts and the Astros are a perfect 5-0 in Oswalt's last 5 starts coming into Tuesday night's game. The Cubs are 0-4 in Dempster's last 4 starts against the Astros and they are just 3-6 when he has pitched at night this season. Take the Houston Astro's as my MLB Bonus Play for Tuesday night.

New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays New York Yankees
-137 at JAMAICA > 13h.

NYY -137: The hottest team in the league winning 10 of 11 since the all star break. They exploded yesterday dismantling TB winning 11-4. Good news for the Yankees they have ace Sabathia going today trying to win his third win in a row. CC is a second half pitcher and is just starting to get warmed up. Historically Sabathia has been great vs TB with a 7-1 2.63 ERA in 12 career starts. The bats of the NYY have been smoking averaging over 8 runs the last 15 games. On the other side they face Kazmir on the mound who has not been good this year. In fact his ERA is approaching 7.00 ERA this season. Historically he has been great against the NYY but he just does not have the same velocity or command he had last year. The NYY will dominate Kazmir early and often and extend there hot streak. EASY m/l Winner. SCORE NYY 8 - TB 3

Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins Minnesota Twins
-123 at BOOKM > 14h.
At 8:10pm our complimentary selection is on the Minnesota Twins over the Chicago White Sox. White Sox ace Mark Buehrle did something in his last start (throwing a perfect game) that only 17 other pitchers in history have done. Moreover, his perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays was his second career no-hitter. To say that a letdown tonight against the Twins in Minnesota is a possibility may be an understatement. It's only been two starts, and about two weeks since Buehrle had his worst start of the season in the Metrodome on July 12, his last start before the All-Star break. It was extremely ugly and Buehrle's only loss in his last five starts. He will face the same Minnesota starter that he faced that day -- righthanded veteran Scott Baker. Since Baker's win 16 days ago, he has had two more starts (both on the road) and pitched very well, surrendering only three earned runs in 13 innings. The Twins will no doubt be happy to be back home for this series after a nine-game road trip as they are 29-20 at home vs. 21-30 on the road. That win on July 12 over the Sox was par for the course as the Twins have won nine of the last 11 games that these two teams have played at the Metrodome. Take the Twins. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

Take "(930) SEATTLE MARINERS"

The Mariners are on the verge of falling out of the AL West chase. But Jared Washburn is pitching absolutely great ball, and he's listed as small chalk tonight as Seattle hosts the Blue Jays and rookie lefty Rzepczynski. He's been effective to date, but I can't resist the red hot Washburn at this number, so the Mariners are the choice.

The Braves are better in the pitching department than on offense, on a 16-10 run under the total. They go with their ace here in Jair Jurrjens (2.67 ERA), who has been red-hot, with a 3-0 record and a 1.37 ERA his last three starts. He's a good strikeout pitcher and faces a free swinging Florida team. Marlin righty Ricky Nolasco has been hot of late, as well, with 6 walks and 23 strikeouts his last 3 starts (18 innings). He has a sizzling 105-23 K to walk ratio overall. Look for a defensive duel, play the Braves/Marlins under the total.
